A New Global Compact to Defend the International Rules-Based System

The international-rules based system is being challenged by authoritarian states, including Russia and China who have a “no limits” partnership. In the case of China, it has previously used its sizable contributions to multilateral institutions to garner influence and to take over strategic standards setting bodies. On taking power and recommitting the UK to spending 0.7% of GNI on ODA spending and re-establishing an independent department for development aid, Labour should host a summit for democratic countries to launch a new global compact in the form of an informal agreement amongst countries that will commit countries to upholding and defending the international-rules based system.
